![]() To see the first stars and galaxies in the early Universe, astronomers have to observe the infrared light given off by them, and use a telescope and instruments optimized for One further challenge is to keep Webb's mirror cold. Engineering Challenge: Keeping Webb's Mirrors Cold Watch the actuators being attached to the back of a telescope mirror in this "Behind the Webb" video. What's even more amazing is that the engineers and scientists working on the Webb telescope literally had to invent how to do this." Lee Feinberg, Webb Optical Telescope Element Manager at NASA Goddard explains, "Aligning the primary mirror segments as though they are a single large mirror means each mirror is aligned to 1/10,000th the thickness of a human hair. The telescope's tertiary mirror remains stationary. ![]() The primary mirror segments also have an additional actuator at its center that adjusts its curvature. The primary mirror segments and secondary mirror are moved by six actuators that are attached to the back of each mirror piece. Actuators, or tiny mechanical motors, provide the answer to achieving a single perfect focus. Once in space, getting these mirrors to focus correctly on faraway galaxies is another challenge. The photos show the flight version of every mirror on the telescope! achieving a single perfect focus- Actuators A, B, or C denotes which of the three mirror prescriptions a segment is. A square mirror would send a lot of the light out of the central region.Įach of Webb's mirrors has an individual designation. A oval mirror, for example, would give images that are elongated in one direction. Finally, a roughly circular overall mirror shape is desired because that focuses the light into the most compact region on the detectors. Symmetry is good because there need only be 3 different optical prescriptions for 18 segments, 6 of each (see above right diagram). If the segments were circular, there would be gaps between them. The hexagonal shape allows for a roughly circular, segmented mirror with "high filling factor and six-fold symmetry." High filling factor means the segments fit together without gaps. (Webb's secondary mirror is 0.74 meters in diameter.) Why hexagonal? Each of the 18 hexagonal-shaped mirror segments is 1.32 meters (4.3 feet) in diameter, flat to flat. The mirror would then unfold after launch. The Webb Telescope team also decided to build the mirror in segments on a structure which folds up, like the leaves of a drop-leaf table, so that it can fit into a rocket. Watch a video on how the telescope deployed after launch More information on Webb's launch configuration. When Webb launched, both wings were stowed in this position, which enabled the mirror to fit into the launch vehicle. Each wing holds three of its primary mirror segments. The James Webb Space Telescope is shown with one of its two "wings" folded.

The Indian Army has now allotted the Mathura-based 1 Strike Corps to the northern borders to keep a check on the PLA across the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Over 50,000 soldiers have been stationed since 2020 at forwarding posts along the LAC with advanced weapons to prevent a change in the status quo. The last disengagement of troops on the LAC took place a year ago which led to the limited resolution of the standoff at Patrol Point 17A in Gogra.ĭelhi and Beijing reached an agreement in February 2021 to disengage troops from the 135-km Pangong Lake, creating buffer zones until all outstanding border issues are resolved. India has been looking at complete disengagement of troops from the friction points and moving back troops to the pre-May, 2020 situation in the entire sector. Since May 2020, when the Chinese military tried to aggressively change the status quo on LAC in eastern Ladakh, both sides have been deployed opposite each other near Patrolling Point 15 which has emerged as a friction point. It released the iPad Pro Leather Sleeve and most recently the MacBook Leather Sleeve, and both feature high quality leather. I’m hoping this can be fixed via a software update, but that’s something potential buyers should be aware of.Īpple has gotten really good with its leather products in the last year or so. One negative thing about the Leather Folio is that “Hey Siri” does not work with the cover closed. You’ll still need to validate with Face ID, just like you need to validate with a passcode or Touch ID on an iPad, but with the iPhone X’s quick default screen timeout settings and the aforementioned wake features, the setting doesn’t seem like a significant time-saver in real world usage. Now that the iPhone has both raise-to-wake and tap-to-wake, I’m not sure how useful the Leather Folio’s Lock / Unlock feature will prove to be for most users. ![]() When you place your iPhone inside of the Leather Folio, a new Lock / Unlock switch appears in the Display preferences. ![]() You’ll still need to unlock your device to start using it fully, but it allows you to quickly check time, widgets, or notifications. Just be sure to place the cards in the correct top housing, and all should be good for wireless charging.Įmbedded at the bottom of the front flap is a magnet that is used to sleep and wake the iPhone X display. The portion of the folio for card storage is engineered in a way that allows you to use a wireless charger with the case without risking demagnetizing your cards. Since the folio is comprised of mostly leather, it will wear in over time, but I still recommend keeping things as light as possible - 1-3 cards max - for the best look. The more cards you add, the more that it takes away from the sleekness of the case, causing it to bulge. Being relatively svelte, I wouldn’t recommend stuffing the Leather Folio with lots of money and cards. Opposite the iPhone X enclosure is a flap with slots available for cards and bills. This decision really pays dividends for a case like the Leather Folio, helping to keep the design as clean as possible. This allows for a cleaner look when the iPhone X is enclosed in a case as the camera cutout doesn’t need to be as big as it needed to be with previous iPhones. Notice that both the flash and rear microphone are now contained within the same rear camera housing. Apple redesigned the camera housing for the iPhone X, and not just with the obvious change from a horizontal to vertical alignment. On the rear of the folio there is a cutout for the iPhone X’s dual camera housing. In other words, it should do a fine job protecting the sides and corners of your iPhone X in case of a drop. The portion of the folio where your iPhone is housed is essentially a Leather Case that encloses the sides and top of the device, with the bottom area partially exposed for the phone’s speakers, microphone, and Lightning port. There’s also strategically-placed microfiber in the interior case to keep the finish of the iPhone X looking spiffy. The iPhone X Leather Folio features leather on the outside and portions of the inside where your cards and bills might go. Now, this theory is not without its critics, as indicated by a counterpoint article published by Kevin Hall and other researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Columbia University ( 2 ). ![]() According to this theory, hunger and overeating aren’t the cause of obesity-they’re a symptom. This vicious cycle, according to researchers like Ludwig, explains many facets of obesity in a new light. The result is that, a few hours after a carbohydrate-rich meal (especially if it’s mostly refined carbs), blood sugar crashes, body fat increases, and you get hungry again. This theory states that excessive carbohydrate consumption causes a spike in insulin, which in turn causes your body to pull blood sugar out of the blood and store it as fat. Not all carbs are created equal, but emerging research suggests that refined carbohydrates (like white flour or white rice) behave a lot like sugars when it comes to determining your body’s response, so lumping them into the same category is starting to make more sense.Īccording to the “carbohydrate-insulin model of obesity”, advocated by researchers like David Ludwig at the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at Boston Children’s Hospital, carbohydrates are at the heart of fat gain ( 1).
